Mayor of the town of Monchegorsk is Igor Ermakov

The town appeared in 1937, it is one of the largest industrial centres of the region, which was built as a result of Severonickel Industrial Complex. There are about thousand workers at the complex.

At present the plant is transformed in PC "Kola mining company", which is included in PC "Norilsk nickel".

The unique biosphere Lapland reserve is situated not far away from the town, the municipal administration together with "Kola mining plant" build "Farmstead of the Lapland Ded Moroz" and tourist route for children and guests of the town.

The are some museums in the town, the most interesting are the Museum of Local lore and the Museum of Coloured Stones. Among the other places of interest can be named the park, the Palace of Culture, the sport complex and the boat station. Here the latest church on the Kola Peninsula is located, which was built with money donated by the Severomorsk Industrial Complex.
